Recent Changes to the South Australia Public Holidays Act

The Public Holidays Act sets the rules and legislation around how public holidays are observed. In South Australia, the Public Holidays Act was updated in 2023. The previous legislation had existed since 1910.

A crucial change made in the new Public Holidays Act is that Sundays are no longer a nominal public holiday, instead they are now classed as a bank holiday.

Below is a bullet point list of the key changes included in the Public Holidays Act 2023 (SA).

  • Easter Sunday is now a public holiday
  • Sunday is no longer a nominal public holiday but Sunday remains a Bank Holiday for the purpose of banks and government offices being closed on a Sunday
  • When Christmas Day and New Years Day fall on a Saturday or Sunday – that day and the following Monday are public holidays
  • When 26 December falls on a Saturday – that day and the following Monday are public holidays
  • When 26 December falls on a Sunday – that day and the following Tuesday are public holidays
  • When Australia Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday – the public holiday transfers to the following Monday
  • There is no longer an additional public holiday on the Monday when ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday (e.g. in 2027 the public holiday will be Sunday 25 April and Monday 26 April will just be a normal Monday)

SA Specific Public Holidays

There are a total of seven national public holidays observed within Australia. In addition, each state has their own public holidays that are set by local government authorities.

In some states there are also local show or event holidays that are observed by regions within each state.

The national public holidays in Australia are:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Australia Day
  • ANZAC Day
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Christmas Day
  • Boxing Day

Note that in South Australia Boxing Day is referred to as Proclamation Day.

The public holidays that are exclusive to South Australia are:

  • Adelaide Cup Day – typically the second Monday in March
  • King’s Birthday – typically the second Monday in June
  • Labour Day – typically the first Monday in October
  • Christmas Eve (part day holiday from 7pm)
  • New Year’s Eve (part day holiday from 7pm)

Note that King’s Birthday and Labour Day are observed in other states within Australia but may not be on the same day.

What is Adelaide Cup Day?

Adelaide Cup Day is a public holiday observed on the second Monday of March each year in South Australia. The Adelaide Cup is a major horse racing carnival held at Morphettville Racecourse in South Australia.

The Adelaide Cup is a 3200m horse race, which is the same distance as the Melbourne Cup.
